Sony Confirms PlayStation 3’s Successor is in Development

Today, Sony made a quick call to investors due to questions on increased research and development costs. Sony’s executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato answered their question.

Masaru Kato was quoted as saying this to investors:

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

It’s funny to note that in March, Kaz Hirai was quoted as saying this:

“…a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now…”

and he also spoke of how the PS3 life cycle wasn’t even half way through their 10 year planned cycle. However, the cat is out of the bag now. We just don’t know how far into the development of the next Sony home console they are.

All three console manufacturers are more than likely always thinking of what’s next, but when investors start seeing the increased spending, you know we are one step closer to seeing the future.
